I attend lots of conferences. It’s my day job. Few are as delightful, rich and fun as MOMcon. The sold-out gathering of more than 3000 in Indianapolis took my breath way.
When I started posting about MOPS and MOMcon, people kept asking, “What’s a MOP?” and “What’s MOMcon?”
Fair questions. Mothers of Preschoolers hosts an annual International Leadership Conference that offers practical training and inspiring teaching to encourage and raise up a new generation of leaders.
When you gather 3000 moms—who are ready to laugh hard, chat until 4am, and celebrate they have time to take a shower and wash their hair—they become the rowdies in all the best ways.
But what I loved most about MOMcon:
- Brilliant, thoughtful theme. This year’s gathering centered around “A Fierce Flourishing”. How do you flourish something fierce?
- Notice Goodness.
- Celebrate Lavishly.
- Embrace Rest.
These call to action were crystal clear throughout the event and made a marked impression on my life.
- Innovative ideas demonstrated on stage. Throughout the event, hilarious minute-to-win-it activities add levity. More important, they offered fresh ideas to leaders and groups around the world for activities they can incorporate in their own gatherings.
- Biblical depth. Speakers including Sherry Surratt, Bob Goff, Jen Hatmaker brought fresh Scriptural teaching that answered the “how” of living a life of faith.
- Ridiculous fun. Never ones to take themselves too serious, I watched moms shake their booty to “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” (thanks Amena Brown and DJ Opdiggy) and maneuver Oreos down their faces creating waves of laughter and joy.
- Killer workshops. Rooms packed out and hearts were filled by teachings from Liz Selzer on healthy conflict management, Annie Downs on the power of words, Margot Starbuck on identity, Lisa Jo-Baker on anger management, Crystal Paine on thriving and Emily Freeman on small moments and so many more.
- Free Astroglide samples. Nope. You can’t make that up. You should have seen the women stuffing their purses. #morebabiesontheway
- Food trucks. Oh yes! Embody what you teach. The convention ended with food trucks and a live band. Way to celebrate lavishly.
